KURMANJI NOMADS

Nomads & Tribes

KURMANJI NOMADS, IRAN

The Kurmanji, or Kurmanji Kurds, also written Kormanji, are one of the oldest and most widespread branches of the Kurdish people, with communities stretching across northeastern Iran, Turkey, and Central Asia. In Iran, they are primarily found in the rugged highlands of North Khorasan, where the landscape shapes both hardship and heritage. They are originally from the border regions of Iran and the Ottoman Empire, they were forcibly relocated, primarily during the Safavid and Afshar dynasties (16th-18th centuries). Nader Shah moved many to Khorasan to serve as a buffer against invaders and to reduce their political influence .
The Kurmanj are known for their strong tribal identity, colourful traditional dress, and especially their vibrant music and group dances performed during festivals, weddings, and gatherings that bind the community across generations. This gallery captures scenes from their daily life and celebrations, reflecting a culture steeped in rhythm, resilience, and ancestral memory.
