Between Two Journeys

5th Migration

Between Two Journeys (2026)

Due to climate change, the time between the winter and summer migrations became longer. Before beginning the main journey, Mohammadyar’s family moved to an area in the highlands of Khuzestan. This location served as a temporary settlement between Qishlaq and Yeylaq.

They remained there until conditions in Yeylaq, at an altitude of about 2,800 metres in the Zagros Mountains became suitable for the flocks. Until the weather got warmer, the snow had melted, and fresh grass grew, they were unable to cross the mountain passes or graze their sheep.

In the spring of 2026, bad weather caused them to extend their stay. It had rained continuously, floods damaged several tents, and the sun rarely appeared. This also created additional difficulties for the family, including the risk of attacks by wild animals and the challenge of caring for the livestock in poor weather.

Alongside these difficulties, economic conditions also affected Mohammadyar’s life. He had sold a large part of his flock to build a house and cover the wedding expenses of his son. Even so, he was still responsible for moving and caring for a large flock, much of which did not belong to him. Some families who had abandoned migration and settled permanently had entrusted part of their flock to Mohammadyar. As a result, he was also responsible for feeding, caring for, and moving their livestock.

This story follows Mohammadyar’s family during their temporary stay in this area. Just as the adults adapted during this period of waiting, the children also adjusted to the conditions of the temporary camp. They used this time as an opportunity to play while they also took on some of the family’s daily responsibilities.
